October cold snap is here — bundle up and get out
It's crisp and clear today. Plenty to do indoors and out before the sun drops at 6:13.
Morning — it's a proper fall day. We've dipped to freezing overnight, so dress in layers if you're heading outside. The sun's going to feel thin once it dips below the horizon at 6:13, so plan accordingly if you've got evening plans. That said, mainly clear skies mean you'll actually see what you're doing all day, which beats the grey.
If you're after a daytime outing, Cirque du Soleil is running a matinee at St Laurent Shopping Centre at 1:00 PM — acrobatics and spectacle, the whole thing indoors where it's warm. Chris Murphy and Peter Elkas are playing an acoustic set at Black Sheep Inn at 2:00 PM if live music is more your speed.
Food-wise, if you're thinking lunch or an early dinner, Zen Bowl just opened in Centretown with Shanghai soup dumplings and pan-fried buns — worth the trip if you're craving something warm and specific. And if you've got a milestone to mark — say, a 30-year anniversary — that's the kind of occasion worth sitting down for proper.
This evening's got real options. The Rapid are home at The Arena at TD Place at 4:00 PM against Vancouver FC if soccer's your thing. For live music, Collective Soul's playing at both the Hard Rock Cafe and the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa, both kicking off at 7:00 PM. If comedy's more your vibe, Sal Vulcano's at Algonquin Commons Theatre at 7:00 PM. Cirque's also running a 4:30 PM show if you missed the matinee.
Worth noting: There was a serious stabbing at Parliament Station on Saturday, so if you're using transit near the Hill, keep your head up. And if you've been following the power grid stuff, Ontario's been pulling U.S. electricity in as the Pickering shutdown reshapes how winter's going to look for the region — doesn't change your Sunday, but it's the kind of thing that'll matter come January.
Stay warm out there. The cold's real today.
