A crisp, cloudy Wednesday in the 613 — dress in layers
Zero degrees and grey, a busy news day, and a Steelheads-67s game this morning if you're a hockey person.
Morning, Ottawa. It's a grey one out there, sitting at 0°C but feeling more like -3 with the wind, so the toque and the good winter coat are not optional if you're walking to the bus stop. Mostly cloudy skies, and with the UV at 2.0 you won't need the sunscreen, but you'll want the hood up. Daylight runs out early today, with sunset at 5:56 PM, so if you're planning anything after work, plan around that dusk and bring a light for the walk home.
On the roads, the big thing to know is that the commercial vehicle blitz pulled 20 trucks off the streets in the west end, so if you're cutting through that way on your commute, you may notice a bit more breathing room than usual. Otherwise, give yourself a few extra minutes on the usual routes and leave the zippy shortcut for another day.
In the news, the Bank of Canada guards who are on strike got fined after noise complaints landed at the mayor's office, which is the kind of story that'll have people talking over coffee in the public service offices downtown. Over in West Carleton–March, Clarke Kelly was re-elected in Ward 5 with a 2,144-vote margin, so that one's settled. And Ottawa police are asking for help identifying a man involved in an assault on an OC Transpo bus, so if you ride the bus and have information, reach out to them. Voters across Ontario are heading to the polls today, with Ottawa's mayoral race among the three headliners, so if you haven't voted yet, the polls are open for you.
If you're grabbing lunch, Zen Bowl in Centretown is bringing Shanghai soup dumplings and pan-fried buns to the neighbourhood, which is a hot, warming pick for a cold afternoon. Top local chef Kat Ferries has traded her grueling kitchen hours for more sustainable work at a butcher shop, and Ottawa chef Yannick La Salle has advanced to the 2027 Canadian Culinary Championship, so there's a lot of good local food talk floating around right now.
This morning the Brampton Steelheads visit the Ottawa 67s at The Arena at TD Place, puck drop at 10:30 AM, so if you're a hockey person and have the morning free, that's a good one to catch. Tonight, the live music and theatre options are plentiful: Intergalactic Goddesses plays at the Algonquin Commons Theatre at 7:00 PM, Serge Fiori performs at the Théâtre du Casino du Lac-Leamy at 8:00 PM, and Zeus with Pacanomad is on at Rum Runners at 8:00 PM. Since it's a cold and dark evening, the indoor shows are the right call.
That's your Wednesday. Bundle up, mind the early dark, and enjoy the evening.
