Cold Halloween Saturday in the 613, with plenty to do after dark
It's a crisp, clear -1 out there, so bundle up, and plan your evening around that 5:52 sunset.
Morning, neighbour. It's a bright one out there, clear skies and -1 on the thermometer, though it feels closer to -4 once the wind gets at you. Coming off the milder stretch we've had, that's a proper jolt, so dig out the warm hat and the good mitts before you head out for coffee. The UV is low at 2.0, so you won't need the sunscreen, but the sun's already doing its thing with a 5:52 sunset tonight, which means the afternoon is short. If you've got errands or a walk on the list, get them done before the light starts to slide.
On the local front, the big one for a lot of people is Erin Coffin winning Kanata South, unseating incumbent Allan Hubley, which will have folks out west talking. Over at city hall and in the courts, a judge has ruled that Ottawa police need to reconsider their denial of a woman's bid to destroy her fingerprints, and separately, a judge found that the death threats made against an Ottawa councillor were motivated by hatred of francophones. Also worth knowing: Ontario clocks go back Sunday, so yes, you get the extra hour in bed, though there's talk the switch may not stick around much longer.
On the food side, if you're craving something special for lunch, Zen Bowl has brought Shanghai soup dumplings and pan-fried buns to Centretown, which is a good excuse to get out in the cold and warm up with something hot. If you're thinking about a burger, be ready for the price tag: Goldie's and Bakery Burger are asking $25 for a sandwich, and they'll tell you why it costs that much. A&W's Hot Honey BBQ Teen Burger lands across Canada Thursday if you'd rather wait and see what the chain is doing this week.
For the afternoon, if you're a hoops fan, the Algonquin Wolves take on the Centennial Colts at 1:00 PM at Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre, a good way to spend a couple of hours indoors out of the wind. There's also Serge Fiori at Théâtre du Casino du Lac-Leamy at 2:00 PM, with his Seul Ensemble show on the same stage, for anyone who'd rather a matinée.
And for tonight, Halloween is live music night in Ottawa, with emo, alt-rock and indie all going at once. Sleeping With Sirens with Rain City Drive play History Ottawa at 6:00 PM. If you want to lean into the costume side, there's a Halloween Bash at the Hard Rock Cafe and another at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa, both at 7:00 PM. Or if you're in a more emo mood, Halloween Emocore 10 x Emo Night Ottawa is at The 27 Club at 7:30 PM. Most of those are indoor shows, so the cold won't matter once you're inside, but do plan your walk home with that -4 wind in mind.
Have a spooky, safe one, and dress for the cold.
