Bundle up, Ottawa — crisp Sunday, big game, live rock tonight
Clear skies and a cold bite today, with Atlético Ottawa's playoff push and a double-header of live music to choose from.
Morning, Ottawa. It's a bright, clear Sunday, but don't let the sunshine fool you: it's -2°C out there, and with the wind it feels closer to -5. Notably colder than the last few days, so this is the morning to dig out the good toque and the warmer mitts before you head out. The UV is low, at 2.0, so sunglasses are more about the glare off the snow than anything else. Daylight runs until about 4:50 PM, which gives you a comfortable window for a long brunch and a walk along the Canal before the sun starts to drop. Plan your outdoor stuff for the middle of the day and save the heavy layers for after dark.
If you're heading out to catch a game, Forge FC is in town to face Atlético Ottawa at TD Place Stadium, with kickoff at 2:00 PM. The Atlético side is in the middle of a playoff push, so there's a real buzz about it. Dress for the stands, because it's cold, and get there a little early to grab something hot before the whistle.
On the local front, Senators fans have a bit of a mixed morning. Phil Tomasino made an immediate impact in a 5-1 win over the Sharks in San Jose, which is a good note to start the day on. The flip side is that Warren Foegele and Andre Burakovsky are both out for three to four weeks with injuries, so expect the lineup to look a little different for a while. Also worth knowing: Ottawa police officer has been cleared of criminal charges in connection with the July hostage shooting, and an Ottawa MPP is calling on Ontario to match Quebec in ending clock changes, which is a debate many of us have strong feelings about over the next few weeks.
For lunch or an early dinner, Zen Bowl has brought Shanghai soup dumplings and pan-fried buns to Centretown, which is a warming pick on a cold day. If you're in the mood for a burger instead, Goldie's and Bakery Burger both charge around $25 for a sandwich, and there's a reason for it, so go in expecting a proper meal.
Tonight, the live music scene has you covered. The Wrecks are on the road with their Finally: OUTSIDE tour, and you can catch them two ways. They play The Bronson at 5:30 PM for the early crowd, or head to the Bronson Centre at 7:00 PM for a bill with Worry Club and Kid Sistr. If rock is more your speed, Hot Mulligan with One Step Closer is playing History Ottawa at 6:00 PM. All three are indoor shows, so you won't need to worry about the cold once you're inside, though the walk over will be brisk. It's a busy weekend overall, with indie rock on Friday, a folk showcase coming up Tuesday, and that playoff soccer carrying on through the afternoon.
Enjoy the sunshine, bundle up well, and get out there while the light is still good. See you around the 613.
