Friday in the 613: mild air, hockey, and a full night out
Eleven degrees and sunny-ish, a sunset just before 4:45, and comedy, rock, and the 67s all competing for your Friday night.
Morning, neighbour. Eleven degrees out there this Friday, partly cloudy, and honestly that's a gift after the week we've had. It's noticeably warmer than the days before, so the jacket can come off the hook for the first part of the day, though keep one handy because the sun sets at 4:43 and the evening air will remind you it's November. UV is barely a factor today, so sunglasses are about the glare on the walk, not the sky.
If you're heading out tonight, plan your transport before you plan your outfit. The city's roads have been on people's minds lately: Ottawa paid nearly $10 million in personal-injury claims in the first half of 2026, and potholes are now the top claim type, so keep your eyes low on the side streets and give yourself a little extra time on the way to any downtown plans.
What's happening around town: the federal budget has been dominating the conversation across the river, and there are five takeaways for Ottawa-Gatineau from it worth a look if you work in or around the public service. Over at the education side, Ontario's unions have set strike votes running from November 4 to 18 over a funding dispute, so if you've got kids or friends in the system, that's a conversation that's going to keep coming up. On the lighter side, the Senators came back from 2-1 down over the Sabres, with Stützle setting up Amadio's winner, which is a good mood-lifter heading into the weekend.
For food, two things caught our eye. Chahaya Malaysia, the Glebe institution, closes for good this Sunday after 41 years, so if you've got a favourite dish there, this is your last shot to sit down and say goodbye. And if you're in Centretown looking for something new, Zen Bowl is bringing Shanghai soup dumplings and pan-fried buns to the neighbourhood. Fair warning on the sandwich prices at Goldie's and Bakery Burger, which are sitting at $25 a pop, though they do have reasons, so go in knowing that before you're surprised at the counter.
Tonight is the big one. Laura Ramoso's The Calm Down Tour kicks off at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino at 6:30, and the same night she's also at the Hard Rock Cafe at 6:30, so if you're a comedy person, get there early. Econoline Crush is at The Bronson and the Bronson Centre at 7:00 if you want to hear some classic rock, and the Windsor Spitfires come to The Arena at TD Place to play the 67s at 7:00 for your hockey fix. Comedy, concerts, and hockey all start within half an hour of each other, so pick your vibe and move quickly, because the city is going to be busy.
This weekend stretches from Friday to Sunday with live music, soccer, and that classic rock reunion, so you've got options across the whole stretch. Enjoy the warm air while it lasts, and take care out there.
