Karin Fekko opens her solo storytelling show with a setup that immediately breaks the audience's expectations. Dressed to turn heads—bleached blonde, miniskirt, crocheted tights—she doesn't look like someone who's about to tell a story rooted in disability. That deliberate misdirection sets the tone for "Who's Gonna Push Your Wheelchair?," now playing at ODD Box through June 27.
The story unfolds in layers. It starts with a betrayal as old as song: kicking out a cheating boyfriend. But the betrayals multiply. Fekko has multiple sclerosis, which can collapse her legs for days or weeks. When her ex leaves, his parting jab is the titular question. Fekko's answer? "They're electric, asshole!"
There's more. Her MS-affected brain can also betray her, sending her into bipolar episodes that shut down her academic mind. And she's cheating too—a secret phone number for a motorbike-riding Frenchman whose voice sets her on fire.
Reviewer Brian Carroll describes it as a saga, a quest: a protagonist facing escalating challenges on the way to something of great value. This isn't pity or complaint. It's a story about lust for life in the face of potential doom, told with sharp humour.
