Spicy Man serves authentic Chinese with heat levels for every palate on Merivale

Spicy Man has been open for more than a year on the north end of Merivale Road, and it's quietly become the kind of place where even heat-averse diners find something worth coming back for.

The restaurant is built on a clear philosophy: authentic regional Chinese cooking from two distinct culinary traditions. Owner Amanda Shi, who also owns Takumi BBQ downstairs at 958 Merivale, brought in chefs from Sichuan province — known for its incendiary, numbing-spice fare — and from Northeastern China, where Shi herself is from. The menu reflects both regions.

What sets Spicy Man apart is its tiered approach to heat. The deep-fried boneless chicken carries a three-chili designation and delivers genuine burn — scalp-tingling, back-of-neck sweat kind of heat. The two-chili mapo tofu packs a lingering, mouth-filling glow. Even the one-chili dry-fried green beans assert themselves with sharp, garlicky pops of flavor.

But the real marker of authenticity lives in the offal section: tripe, beef aorta, pork liver, pork kidney, and more. These are the dishes that signal a kitchen isn't cooking for Western palates. Add to that the roar of gas burners audible from the dining room — a sonic promise of what Cantonese cooks call "wok hei," the breath-of-the-wok char and smokiness that only happens with proper high heat.

For those genuinely afraid of chili, Spicy Man also delivers dishes without heat warnings. Friends with low tolerance found them quite good — flavorful without the burn. The spacious, minimally decorated dining room keeps the focus where it belongs: on the food and the kitchen's skill.
