An Ottawa country singer's dream opening slot at Bluesfest was rescheduled to make room for Quebec rock sensations Angine de Poitrine on the main stage, a decision that left the 24-year-old artist frustrated but ultimately understanding.

Nayana was originally scheduled to perform at 6 p.m. on July 17 on the RBC Main Stage, opening for Sheryl Crow and Ella Langley. Her slot has been moved to 5 p.m., with Angine de Poitrine now performing at 6 p.m. Bluesfest boss Mark Monahan said the shift was necessary to avoid overcrowding at the Hard Rock Stage, which holds about 5,000 spectators. Angine de Poitrine's unexpected rise in demand—they drew what was reported as the Montreal Jazz Festival's largest crowd since Stevie Wonder in 2009—required the move to the larger main stage.

"It's hard for us to predict which act the patrons are coming for," Monahan said, adding the decision was driven by safety concerns rather than a reflection on Nayana's talent. "We certainly didn't want to do anything to hurt Nayana."

Nayana shared her disappointment in a TikTok video, noting that hundreds of friends, family, and fans had planned to attend her original slot. As an independent artist without management, she manages every detail herself. "I really felt like I had Ottawa and Bluesfest and the whole community behind me," she said, "and now I just feel like I might have been an idiot."

Within hours, she shifted her perspective. In a message to the Ottawa Citizen, Nayana called the original gig a "huge deal and milestone in my career" but acknowledged it was "an unfortunate circumstance for me but an understandable one." Monahan noted that gates opening at 4:30 p.m. on July 17 means there will likely be more people in the venue during her show than originally expected. Bluesfest runs July 9 to 19 at LeBreton Flats Park.
