The province's Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an Ottawa police officer shot and wounded a 42-year-old man during an alleged hostage standoff in Kanata on Thursday night.

Ottawa police received a 911 call around 7 a.m. Thursday about a woman being held hostage at knifepoint inside a home on Finlayson Crescent in the Morgan's Grant district. Police negotiated with the suspect for roughly 14 hours until a tactical unit entered the residence around 9 p.m. to free the woman, who was not injured during the operation.

The man was arrested and taken to hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. He is in stable condition. Four investigators and two forensic investigators from the SIU have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent provincial agency that investigates police actions that may have resulted in death, serious injury, and the discharge of a firearm at a person. Anyone with information, including video or photos, is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or at the SIU website. No charges have been laid; the investigation is ongoing.
