Ottawa firefighters conducted an unusual rescue Sunday afternoon when they worked to free a 27-year-old woman trapped in mud at Rebecca Pond in Kanata.
At about 3 p.m. on May 16, Ottawa Fire Services responded to a call from the woman's father, who said she had lost her balance while fishing from a plastic culvert and become stuck waist-deep in the mud, sinking deeper with each attempt to move. The woman's father met fire crews at the entrance to a trail near the intersection of Old Second Line Road and Klondike Road, and they advanced 400 metres along the trail to locate her.
Firefighters confirmed her left leg was trapped in the mud up to her hip. Using a pike pole to stabilize her, crews dug around her leg to free it. By 3:16 p.m., she had been lifted out of the mud uninjured.
