The Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex in Orléans will undergo significant renovations after the federal government diverted $6.3 million to the facility.
Minister Gregor Robertson and MP Marie-France Lalonde announced Wednesday that the funding—provided through the Build Communities Strong Fund—will support a full-sized gym that can be divided to allow multiple activities at once. The project also includes a new reception and customer service area, accessible changerooms, better storage, and improvements throughout the building.
"Investments in facilities like the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex are helping build stronger, safer, and more resilient communities for generations to come," Robertson said.
Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said the investment reflects Orléans' rapid growth: "This new gymnasium will create more opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities to participate in recreation programs, gather with their neighbours, and enjoy a facility that reflects the needs of our growing community."
The funding announcement follows a broader federal initiative announced in March aimed at giving municipalities money for housing-related infrastructure through the $51 billion Build Communities Strong Fund, intended to help cut development charges by as much as 50 per cent for the next three years.
