Vanier Community Finally Gets New Recreation Centre
The neighbourhood has been without a dedicated recreation facility for years. That changes soon as the City and a private partner move forward with plans.
Vanier residents are about to get what's long been missing: a brand new recreation and community centre. The project, a partnership between the City of Ottawa, the Vanier Community Service Centre, and developer Regional Group, is moving forward at 250 Montreal Road.
For years, Vanier has lacked a dedicated public recreation facility—a gap that left residents relying on services in other neighbourhoods. The void has been particularly felt by families, seniors, and youth programming that typically depends on accessible, localized infrastructure.
Andrée-Anne Martel, executive director of the Vanier Community Service Centre, emphasized that the centre will serve as both a recreational hub and a broader community anchor. The facility is expected to include gymnasium space, meeting rooms, and programming areas tailored to serve the neighbourhood's needs.
While timelines have not been formally announced, Regional Group's involvement signals that construction could begin within the next fiscal year or two. The project represents a significant reinvestment in a neighbourhood that has historically faced neglect in city planning and capital allocation.
For Vanier, this is long-overdue infrastructure that will reshape how residents access fitness, youth programs, and community events without leaving their neighbourhood.
