OPP traffic push nets dozens of charges including one driver using a laptop while operating vehicle on Ottawa-area highways.

Provincial police charged 23 people with distracted driving offences during a traffic enforcement operation on highways across the Ottawa region, with one egregious case involving a driver using a laptop while behind the wheel.

The enforcement push, conducted on May 20, resulted in 56 total charges for various traffic violations, but distracted driving proved the most prevalent infraction. Police documented several instances where drivers were caught touching or actively using their phones while operating vehicles, and officers shared photos of the violations on social media.

The laptop case stands out as particularly alarming. Using a computer while driving represents a severe and obvious distraction that endangers the driver, passengers, and everyone else on the road. It's difficult to imagine a scenario where this would be necessary, let alone justified.

These charges arrive as distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of collisions on Ontario highways. The OPP's enforcement strategy aims to deter the behavior through visible policing and public awareness. Each charge carries fines and demerit points that accumulate on a driver's record.

The operation reflects ongoing efforts to make highways safer, though the sheer volume of offenders suggests the message isn't getting through to everyone on the road.
