Cohere, a major AI company founded in 2019 and backed by more than $1.5 billion in funding from firms including Nvidia and Salesforce Ventures, announced it is opening its first office in Ottawa near Lansdowne Park.

The company already employs nearly 30 people in the National Capital Region across roles in go-to-market, engineering, infrastructure, security, and sovereign AI. The new office signals a major bet on the city's technology talent pool.

"Ottawa's deep technical talent, strong research community, and long history of technology innovation make it a natural place for Cohere to grow," the company said in a statement. CEO Aidan Gomez added: "Canada is home for Cohere. It's where we founded the company, where so much of our talent comes from, and where we want to keep building for the long term."

Cohere serves customers including Bell Canada and Dell, and reported recurring revenue of more than US$240 million in 2025. The company also agreed earlier this year to merge with Aleph Alpha, a German AI competitor. Cohere maintains offices in Montreal, New York City, San Francisco, London, Paris, and Seoul.

The company already has a major footprint in the Ottawa region: last spring, it obtained naming rights to Ottawa's largest convention centre, a 200,000-square-foot facility on Uplands Drive near Ottawa Airport. The venue, previously called the EY Centre, is now known as Cohere Centre. The company has not announced an opening date for the Lansdowne office or disclosed how many people it plans to hire there.
