With warm weather finally arriving, Ottawa's brewery patios are set for a banner season—and city council's decision to waive patio fees for businesses operating on public land is giving the sector a major boost.

Lowertown Brewery on York Street in the ByWard Market is among the venues benefiting from the fee break, which represents thousands in monthly savings. Managing partner Alex Sirois of Ottawa Venues says the timing couldn't be better: Lowertown is already anticipating a monumental season thanks to the upcoming opening of a rooftop seating area with a retractable roof that will expand capacity by a few dozen seats.

"We're real happy," Sirois said. "That's a huge expense for us."

Lowertown's sunny York Street location epitomizes the high-traffic, see-and-be-seen patio vibe, but Ottawa's brewery scene spans neighbourhoods and settings. Dominion City Brewing in the industrial east end built its Treehouse patio nearly a decade ago to capitalize on shade from mature trees overlooking an adjacent soccer field—a 30-seat oasis that regularly draws soccer families and teammates. Recent expansion added another 30 seats in a zone bordered by raised-bed garden boxes that supply fresh herbs, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant to the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard.

"It is a literal beer garden that grows throughout the season," said brewery co-owner Josh McGannett.

From high-traffic market blocks to nondescript parking lots transformed into outdoor drinking destinations, Ottawa's patio culture reflects the city's range. The fee waiver was designed to enhance the capital's bicentennial celebrations—and it's arriving at exactly the moment when everyone wants to be outside.
