Five Carleton University researchers have been honoured by the Royal Society of Canada in its 2026 Class of Fellows and College Members, among exceptional scholars, artists, and scientists recognized nationally.
Two Carleton researchers were elected as Fellows of the RSC's Academy of Arts and Humanities, the highest honour. Rod Phillips, an internationally renowned historian in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, studies family, divorce, and alcohol. Phillips has authored 13 books translated into 10 languages and served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Family History for 30 years. He is also president of the Society for French Historical Studies.
Ming Tiampo, also from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, is an internationally recognized scholar and curator who leads the art history field's "global turn." Tiampo advances decolonial and transnational approaches to modernism, examining interconnected histories of migration, race, and empire through international exhibitions, publications, and public projects. The work has influenced how scholars and cultural institutions examine the relationship between art and power.
Three Carleton researchers were named Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Jennifer Bruin, Faculty of Science, researches environmental pollutants and their links to insulin regulation and diabetes. A 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellow, Bruin leads a translational toxicology research program combining experimental research, epidemiology, and biomonitoring—work that provides policymakers with evidence on chemical use as global diabetes rates climb.
Laura Horak, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and a 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellow, is redefining film and media studies by focusing on contributions of marginalized communities. Horak's award-winning publications and digital projects—including the Transgender Media Portal and Cinema's First Nasty Women—connect overlooked histories of gender and sexuality with contemporary feminist, queer, and trans movements.
