Ottawa-Gatineau has been selected to host the 2028 Francophonie Summit, a major international gathering that promotes the French language and culture.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the selection on Canada Day. The Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) summit brings together leaders from 90 member states and governments every two years to set political objectives and strengthen international cooperation. Canada is a founding member of OIF, established in 1970.

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe called the news "a tremendous victory for Ottawa." Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, who formally presented Canada's candidacy in March, said in a statement: "Canada is honoured to welcome that global community here in 2028."

Local tourism officials expect the event to generate significant economic impact. According to the 2024 summit in France, such gatherings typically feature 100 delegates, including 50 heads of state and government, along with high-level diplomatic meetings, economic discussions, cultural programming and community events. Geneviève Latulippe, CEO of Tourisme Outaouais, said the summit is "an exceptional international showcase" for the region as both a leisure and business tourism destination. The Prime Minister's Office has confirmed that activities will be held on both sides of the Ottawa River.
