After weeks of volatility driven by global supply concerns and refinery output shifts, drivers across the GTA will finally catch a break at the pumps Friday.

According to Roger McKnight, chief petroleum analyst at En-Pro International, gas prices are expected to drop eight cents per litre on May 22, bringing the cost to 183.9 cents at most stations. The decrease follows a period of unpredictable swings as international crude markets responded to supply disruptions and refineries adjusted output.

While the eight-cent drop offers modest relief, prices remain elevated compared to earlier this year. Analysts expect continued volatility through the summer as seasonal demand climbs and refinery maintenance schedules kick in.

For Ottawa drivers, regional prices typically track slightly lower than the GTA, though the same wholesale forces apply. The dip should ripple across the National Capital Region by Friday afternoon, depending on how quickly local retailers adjust their pumps.
