Justice Marlyse Dumel has been appointed as the regional senior judge for the East Region of the Ontario Court of Justice, effective September 25, 2026, Attorney General Doug Downey announced Tuesday.
Dumel was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in March 2017 and has been presiding in Ottawa in both English and French. She served as the local administrative judge from 2022 to 2026 and has represented the East Region for the Association of Ontario Judges. She is currently a member of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee.
Before her judicial appointment, Dumel worked with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada for 13 years, prosecuting criminal matters and providing legal advice and training to prosecutors and police services. She was secretary for the National Prosecution Policy Committee and a member of the Employment Equity and Diversity Committee. Dumel is a member of the International Association of Women Judges and has been co-chair of Ottawa's Futures in Justice program since 2023.
Dumel was called to the bar in 2002. A regional senior judge exercises the powers and performs the duties of the chief justice in their region, subject to the chief justice's authority—including scheduling court hearings and assigning cases to individual judges.
