A man was shot on the 300 block of Prince Albert Street in Overbrook on Wednesday afternoon and rushed to hospital in critical condition. Ottawa Paramedic Service worked to resuscitate him en route, but he remained in life-threatening condition upon arrival.

Officers took another person into custody. Police said investigators are still working to determine what led to the shooting.

A neighbour who heard a loud pop around 1 p.m. said he came outside to find a man on the ground with people screaming. "Most of the people on the block know that, if you're not in that sort of life, there's a low probabilities of something like this happening to you," he told the Ottawa Citizen. He and his family have lived in the area for 26 years and hadn't heard of previous shootings there.

Police said the Rideau-Vanier ward, which includes Prince Albert Street, had six shooting incidents in 2025—the most of any ward that year. However, the ward has seen a consistent decline over time: 13 incidents in 2021, dropping to six in 2025. Ottawa overall saw 83 shooting incidents in 2022, falling to 38 in 2025.

Residents can expect increased police presence as officers canvass for witnesses and evidence.
