Gas prices in Ottawa are forecast to drop 8 cents per litre on September 12, falling from the current 187.9 cents to 179.9 cents at most stations. The drop marks the lowest price so far in September, according to Roger McKnight, chief petroleum analyst at En-Pro International.

The decline is driven by the industry's annual switchover from summer to winter gasoline, which typically lowers production costs and wholesale prices. The timing comes after a late-summer stretch of price increases: in July, prices ranged from 163.9 to 183.9 cents per litre; in August, from 162.9 to 182.9 cents per litre; in June, from 157.9 to 177.9 cents per litre.

Diesel prices are heading in the opposite direction. Diesel is forecast to increase 9 cents across most of the country on Friday, with an 8-cent increase in Halifax.
