The Ottawa Redblacks fell 27-22 to the defending Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday, July 3, extending their losing streak to 10 games and remaining winless at 0-4 this season.
Playing in front of 15,154 fans at TD Place, the Redblacks started strong but couldn't close. Quarterback Jake Maier connected on a 34-yard pass to Geno Lewis that set up a short-yardage touchdown by backup QB Bryson Barnes, but a failed two-point conversion kept Ottawa trailing by five points late in the fourth quarter.
With about two and a half minutes remaining, the Redblacks gambled on third-and-one near the Saskatchewan 15-yard line and failed to convert—the sixth such failed short-yardage attempt this season. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie was visibly angry in the second half after an official ruled rookie receiver Cade McDonald grounded on what could have been a first down, forcing a punt that preceded a 101-yard punt-return touchdown by Saskatchewan's Mathew Sexton.
Saskatchewan's Trevor Harris led a dominant third quarter, capping an eight-play, 70-yard drive with a 23-yard touchdown pass to KeeSean Johnson that put the Roughriders ahead 27-16 heading into the fourth. Despite the loss, Brett Lauther extended his streak of successful field goal attempts to 13 straight with an 18-yard kick.
The Redblacks face an immediate turnaround: they play at Edmonton on Thursday, July 9, against the undefeated Elks to start Week 6.
