Technology caught up with a teenager on Highway 417 when an Ontario Provincial Police automated licence plate recognition (ALPR) camera flagged a bright blue Audi around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

The system pinged that the vehicle's owner had a suspended license. When officers pulled over the car, they discovered the driver was a 17-year-old on a G1—the most restrictive license level in Ontario, which typically requires a licensed supervising driver in the vehicle at all times.

The teen was given six charges and is expected to appear in Provincial Court at a later date. This is a straightforward catch made possible by the province's investment in automated scanning technology, which continuously sweeps highway traffic for registered violations. It's the kind of enforcement that works quietly until someone gets unlucky.

The OPP didn't specify what the charges are, but driving with a suspended owner or operating a vehicle without proper supervision as a G1 holder typically carries escalating penalties depending on the jurisdiction and prior history.
