Coun. Tim Tierney of Beacon Hill-Cyrville has become Ottawa's first Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) president in 87 years, positioning the city at a unique advantage within the national municipal advocacy body.
Tierney said he plans to leverage his location — five blocks from Parliament Hill — to advocate for municipalities across the country. "I have the distinct privilege to be able to just walk up there and chat with people on a regular basis — something I fully intend on doing," he said.
The FCM advocates for more than 2,000 municipalities across Canada. After attending his first FCM meeting 15 years ago, Tierney became increasingly involved with the organization, which he describes as having undeniable impact.
Infrastructure is his top priority — what he calls the "non-glamorous" issues like underground sewage systems. "If I don't actually have ministers or MPs whispering in the hall going, 'Oh God, here comes Tim again,' I haven't done my job," Tierney said, pledging to be hands-on with support from his FCM team.
Tierney will serve as president for a one-year term.
