The Toronto District School Board has announced hundreds of additional layoffs affecting administrative employees. The board will lay off 218 central administration staff and eliminate an additional 91 vacant positions.
A TDSB spokesperson told CityNews that the layoffs will not impact classroom staff. "After years of declining enrolment, the TDSB is taking steps to modernize and right-size the number of central administration staff to ensure resources are focused where they matter most — in schools and classrooms," the spokesperson wrote.
The school board says the changes are "part of the TDSB's broader efforts to protect classroom learning, support student achievement and restore long-term financial sustainability". The board stated the cuts are part of its attempts to modernize the number of central administration staff to ensure its resources remain in schools and classrooms.
The announcement comes weeks after the TDSB announced it was eliminating 289 teaching positions for the 2026-2027 school year, also citing declining enrolment.
The TDSB has been under provincial supervision since June. CBC Toronto has reached out to CUPE Local 4400 and the Professional Student Services Personnel bargaining unit for comment.
