Santa Madre: Toronto's Most Mysterious Mexican Restaurant Opens Soon
A secret new spot on Gerrard Street East is hiding behind papered-over windows and a tiny peephole marked 'Can you keep a secret?'
There's a new Mexican restaurant opening in Toronto's Little India neighbourhood, and it's being kept way on the down low—literally.
If you've walked down Gerrard Street East between Ashdale and Hiawatha lately, you might have noticed a mysterious seafoam green storefront with white script lettering that reads "Santa Madre." The windows are papered over. The only visible opening is a tiny peephole with a sign asking: "Can you keep a secret?"
It's a marketing move, sure, but it's also an honest one. The restaurant—which is affiliated with Chef Luis Valenzuela, the owner and chef behind beloved Beaches spot Holi Taco—isn't ready to announce itself to the city yet. No website. No social media. Just a bare-bones Google business listing with eight reviews from what appear to be a quiet soft opening.
What little information exists comes from those early reviewers. The menu features an extensive selection of tacos, tortas, masa and milpa dishes, plus a tight lineup of desserts. Traditional Mexican cooking with room for interpretation and creativity.
Santa Madre hasn't officially opened its doors at press time, but once it does, the secret's getting out. This is the kind of word-of-mouth moment that defines Toronto's food scene—a chef with proven chops, a neighbourhood that loves food, and a concept confident enough to let the work speak before the hype machine kicks in. When the doors open, expect lines.
