Canada won its first men's FIFA World Cup match, defeating Qatar 6-0 at BC Place on June 18.

Cyle Larin scored first, then Jonathan David added two goals in the first half. Canada dominated through 45 minutes with the crowd in full voice.

Then, in the 51st minute, the match took a grim turn. Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné collided with Qatari defensive midfielder Assim Madibo. A loud crack was heard on the broadcast. Koné looked in shock at his leg, which appeared to be broken. The medical crew attended to him for over seven minutes before he was stretchered off the pitch. The crowd cheered as he left the field.

Madibo was given a red card on the play. It was Qatar's second red card of the match, leaving them with nine players.

Koné was replaced by Nathan Saliba. Minutes later, Saliba scored a beautiful goal off a free kick, giving Canada a commanding 4-0 lead. He held up Koné's jersey to the crowd in his honour.
