June food and drink worth the detour

From a FIFA-themed lager to Pride cookies to Taco Week, June brings seasonal flavours worth seeking out across the city.

June is settling in with food and drink worth stepping out for, starting with a three-nation collaboration that shows up perfectly timed for the summer tournament season.

Common Ground Beer from Cabin Brewing Company is a West Coast Mexican lager born from a partnership between Calgary's Cabin Brewing, Headlands Brewing in California, and Rey Arbol Cerveza Artesenal in Jalisco—a nod to the FIFA World Cup's three hosting countries. The beer arrives on tap at Cabin's taproom at 505 36 Ave. S.E., or you can grab a pack to bring home for the games. It's the kind of beer that makes sense of a tournament watched across borders.

Craig's Cookies is celebrating Pride Month with a special Pride Mix available in six- or 12-packs throughout June. The cookies come in the colours of the Pride flag—strawberry milk chocolate, chocolate orange, lemon white chocolate, matcha, Cookie Monster, and ube coconut. They're at 835 17 Ave. S.W., or online at craigscookies.com.

If you're chasing tacos, Taco Week & Margarita Madness runs until June 7, and Native Tongues in Victoria Park is worth the detour. Their tacos dorados con papa y ceviche—two crispy fried tacos loaded with potato, Gouda, mozzarella, and shrimp ceviche—are the kind of dish that justifies stepping out in the rain.

The Red Mile and surrounding blocks are where most of the action concentrates for these seasonal pushes, but they ripple across the city. June's a month where chasing new flavours feels less like a chore and more like an excuse to move around town.
