Twenty thousand runners will take to Calgary streets this weekend for the Servus Credit Union Calgary Marathon, each carrying their own story of why they run.

For 27-year-old Shikara Fahie, last year's first half-marathon was a revelation. "I never thought of myself as being able to run a half marathon," she said. "So I said, why limit myself?" This year, she's stepping up to the full marathon distance.

The marathon draws participants across all experience levels—first-timers testing their limits, seasoned runners chasing personal records, and athletes honoring friends and family members. The diversity of motivation creates a unique community energy on race day.

Most runners report that their reasons extend beyond fitness. Many run to raise funds for causes, to prove something to themselves after setbacks, or to feel part of a larger movement. The weekend event has grown into one of Calgary's marquee athletic occasions, drawing families to cheer from the sidelines and volunteers to staff water stations throughout the course.

The marathon represents more than athleticism—it's a collective expression of determination and personal meaning making in motion.
