Thousands gather downtown as Spain defeats Argentina 1-0 in FIFA World Cup final

Thousands of soccer fans squeezed beneath downtown Calgary skyscrapers in front of a large screen on Sunday as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the FIFA World Cup final. Barcelona striker Ferran Torres netted the game's only goal in the 106th minute.

Spain supporters erupted in celebration on 2nd Street and Stephen Avenue S.W., hoisting the country's red and gold flag and chanting "ole, ole." One Argentina fan held his country's blue and white flag in mockery as the crowd celebrated Spain's victory.

"All I can say is viva Espana," said a woman wearing a Spain jersey. Erica Marquiz, who is from Spain, noted that while the energy was positive, Calgary remained "much more of a hockey city." She estimated the crowd at several thousand and said it felt slow compared to watch parties in Spain. "Maybe we need two more World Cups to really get there," she said.

The final match was watched by an estimated 1.8 billion people worldwide. Despite Canada not advancing past round 16, Calgary Minor Soccer Association spokesman Josh Perrault said the tournament had energized the local soccer scene. "We've been saying Calgary's a soccer city for a while. Canada's not playing but people showed up for soccer — it's amazing," he said. He added that participation predictions for next season remain to be seen, "but for now, it's the summer of a lifetime."

According to Ernie Tsu, president of the Alberta Hospitality Association, the World Cup has boosted pub revenues across the city by 20 to 25 per cent, with numerous reservations at suburban locations alongside downtown venues.
