Black bear captured in Diamond Valley after weeks raiding garbage and composts

Alberta Fish and Wildlife has trapped and relocated a black bear that had been making repeated visits to Diamond Valley, getting into garbage bins, composts and other household attractants.
The bear was caught several days after a trap was first set in the Bailey Ridge area and later moved near the end of Okalta Road. The Town of Okotoks thanked residents for their cooperation while the trap was in place.
Bears that learn residential areas provide easy food sources are more likely to return and can become increasingly comfortable around people, the town said. To prevent similar conflicts, residents can secure garbage and compost until collection day, remove spilled food and other attractants, keep pet food indoors, and maintain clean BBQs and outdoor cooking areas.
This incident follows earlier bear activity in the broader Calgary region. HighOnCity reported a black bear spotted multiple times in Fish Creek Park in June, another near Voitier's Flats in July, and an attack on a hiker on the Cumberland trail near Bevan Wetlands in late July that left the person injured.
