Some Calgary households will lose door-to-door mail delivery starting in 2027 when Canada Post converts 56,000 addresses in the city to community mailboxes.

The move is part of Canada Post's announcement Thursday of 37 communities across the country experiencing conversion next year. Calgary and Edmonton are among them, with 56,000 combined addresses affected in Alberta. Nationally, the conversions involve 485,000 addresses on top of the 136,000 announced in April.

Canada Post says the shift is a key element of its plan to transform postal service and convert four million addresses that still receive home delivery over the next five years.

"Community mailbox conversions will increase security by putting nearly all mail and parcels delivered by Canada Post under lock and key," the Crown corporation said in a statement. "It will also reduce costs, as delivering to the door costs significantly more than to a community mailbox."

Nearly three-quarters of Canadian addresses already receive mail through community, apartment lobby, and post office mailboxes.

Canada Post says converting addresses from door-to-door delivery to a community mailbox typically takes months. The corporation is initiating discussions with local governments to prepare affected communities.
