Albertans with severe vision loss can now apply for disabled parking placards, expanding the province's accessible parking system beyond mobility challenges.

The change recognizes that accessibility needs extend beyond physical mobility. Those eligible are those whose vision loss prevents them from driving. Anyone seeking a placard must have a medical professional sign off on the application.

Provinces including British Columbia and Saskatchewan have already expanded their rules to include those with vision loss.
