San Francisco-based Anthropic is laying the groundwork for a major Canadian expansion that could mean new data centres and increased demand for Alberta's natural gas.

Two job postings from the company—a community engagement manager and a compute country lead—suggest plans to bring "gigawatts of compute" to Canada with a focus on Alberta. The compute country lead position describes someone ultimately responsible for "bringing gigawatts of compute online in Canada," with work spanning site selection, leasing, energy, financing, and government relations.

Anthropic's interest arrives over a month after Meta announced a $13 billion data centre roughly 35 kilometres north of Edmonton. Analysts at TD Securities previously found that Anthropic intends to add at least one gigawatt of load in Canada, likely for data centres. The timing of a potential project remains uncertain, though the company's build-out could lead to a "meaningful" rise in power demand, most likely in Alberta.

Alberta's provincial government has been pushing data centre proponents to bring their own generation rather than rely on the grid. The province's cheap and abundant natural gas is likely the power source for many projects. The government is currently working with around 25 data centre proponents on roughly 50 potential project sites.

Anthropic confirmed it made two job postings in Canada but declined to say what its plans are in coming months. The company's Claude AI model is one of the world's most advanced, competing with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.
