The Calgary Fire Department lifted safety advisories on the Bow and Elbow rivers Tuesday morning as flow rates dropped below advisory levels.

Although reduced visibility and debris remain, both rivers are expected to improve to typical summer conditions. Water temperature is still cold, but residents can resume normal activities on and around the waterways. The department reminds users to practice caution and proper safety practices.

Melting snow and floating debris from annual runoff create dangerous conditions that prompt advisories each spring. Several departments continuously monitor Calgary's rivers, and conditions can change rapidly during thunderstorms that cause sudden flow increases.

The Calgary Fire Department Aquatic Rescue Team will continue patrolling the waterways. Users should actively supervise children, stay within arm's reach of young swimmers, select proper watercraft, avoid tying boats together, wear ankle leashes while on the river, and ensure all users have properly fitting life jackets.
