Brother convicted of Calgary teen's fatal stabbing handed eight-year prison term

One of two brothers convicted in the unprovoked fatal assault on 18-year-old Danillo Canales Glenn has received an eight-year prison sentence. Because of enhanced credit for pre-sentencing custody and time spent on house arrest, the now-20-year-old offender will have approximately four years and four months left to serve.

Justice Allison Kuntz rejected defence arguments that the offender had already served the equivalent of a 3½-year sentence, instead accepting Crown submissions that his conduct placed him in the highest range of manslaughter cases. The offender pleaded guilty last October 31 to a reduced charge of manslaughter in the September 5, 2023, assault on Canales Glenn at Copperfield Community Centre.

The brothers attacked Canales Glenn while he was playing basketball with two friends. The older brother bear-sprayed the victim before assaulting him, while his younger sibling, then 16, fatally stabbed him. Both brothers had gone to the area armed with bear spray and with their hoods up to disguise themselves, according to facts admitted at guilty plea.

Justice Kuntz noted that the offender "initiated the violence by incapacitating an unarmed victim" and that the brothers brought weapons rather than retrieving them after an initial confrontation. "A substantial custodial sentence is required," she said.

The younger sibling, a minor who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was sentenced to 12 months in custody followed by six months under community supervision after spending 25 months at the Calgary Young Offender Centre. Both brothers were initially charged with second-degree murder. The older brother's defence counsel has stated she will appeal the sentence, as is the younger sibling's sentence.
