Calgary police have charged a 50-year-old volunteer rugby coach with sexual assault after an investigation revealed he allegedly used his position of trust to groom and abuse a minor at one of the city's high schools.

Drew Alan Robertson, who coached at Henry Wisewood High School, met the victim when she was 15 years old and reportedly exploited his role as a coach to maintain contact with her through school and extracurricular activities. Police say the abuse continued for nearly two years before a report was filed on May 12.

Robertson was arrested on May 13 and faces charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation. The investigation revealed how predators can weaponize positions of authority—especially in youth sports, where access and trust are built into the relationship. Police said he had contact with the victim both through her school and through activities outside of it, giving him multiple avenues to maintain the abuse.

The Calgary Police Service reminded parents and guardians to be vigilant about who has access to their children and to watch for warning signs of grooming behavior. Anyone with information about other potential victims is encouraged to contact police.
