Calgary Transit introduced its first new express bus route on Monday, launching a modernized model designed to speed up cross-city travel with all-day, two-way service rather than the peak-period-only approach of earlier express routes.
Route 503 Symons Valley Express provides limited-stop service connecting Sage Hill and surrounding north-central neighbourhoods with downtown Calgary. The route is part of a 500-series network expected to expand over time, reflecting changes identified in the North Central Transit Service Review and making use of previous infrastructure investments along Centre Street North.
Unlike traditional express routes, which operated primarily during rush hours in one direction, the new 500-series model runs throughout the day in both directions, offering fewer stops and aiming to provide more consistent travel times. Calgary Transit is also renaming Route 300 to Route 500 Airport Express as part of the same initiative.
"Calgary is growing, and the way people travel is changing," said Sharon Fleming, Director of Calgary Transit. "The new 500-series gives customers the fast, direct service they value while better connecting them to the rest of our transit network. It is a smarter, more flexible approach that helps us serve more people, more efficiently."
The route gives north-central neighbourhoods a direct connection to downtown while complementing existing local buses. According to Calgary Transit, the performance of Route 503 will help shape the future of additional 500-series routes as the city continues to grow.
The launch supports broader improvements made through the North Central Transit Service Review and represents a shift in how Calgary structures express service to match changing commuting patterns and ridership demand across the city.
