Calgary Transit is exploring naming rights sponsorships for its downtown Free Fare Zone in an effort to generate non-fare revenue without eliminating the free transit service.
The Free Fare Zone spans 7 Avenue between Downtown West/Kerby and City Hall/Bow Valley College stations, allowing customers to travel without paying. The initiative follows council direction to identify potential non-fare revenue sources after the transit system experienced a revenue shortfall in 2024 driven by shifts in fare product purchases and increased use of the Low-income Transit Pass.
Under the sponsorship model, a corporate partner would gain prominent presence along the corridor while the fare-free service continues unchanged. Sharon Fleming, Director of Calgary Transit, said the city is "exploring whether there is interest in a naming rights partnership that creates value for both Calgary Transit and a future sponsor. This process will help us better understand what opportunities may exist while continuing to support the important role the Free Fare Zone plays in downtown mobility."
Ward 1 Councillor Kim Tyers, who advocated for continuing the search for a sponsor, framed it as an investment opportunity for local businesses. "I heard from residents and businesses that the downtown Free Fare Zone is a service that Calgarians want to see maintained," Tyers said. "Offering local businesses a direct way to invest in Calgary's growth, tourism and event economy."
