Calgary Wild FC ends 293-day winless streak with dominant 4-0 victory

Calgary Wild FC ended a 293-day winless drought on August 6, with a dominant 4-0 victory over CS Mont-Royal Outremont at ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows in their first-ever W Canadian Championship match.

The result was more than a relief for a team that had gone 0W-12L-2D in Northern Super League action this season. Wild assistant coach Kory Babington, who led the team with head coach Leah Blayney away for personal reasons, called the result pleasing. "It's no secret, we've had a tough season, so going into a cup competition, which is exciting and has rewards at the end, and to score some good goals there was pleasing for the players. To get some rhythm and the new signings, it was great to give them more minutes and continue to build a bit of team chemistry."

Mya Jones scored twice for Calgary. Her first goal came early in the opening half, giving the Wild control of the match. Her second came early in the second half when she converted a cross from fellow Calgarian Grace Stordy with a header. "Yeah … it just feels really good to get that first win," Jones said. "I think it's kind of just something we need to build off of from here."

Jones said her approach shifted with the competition. "I think today for me, I was like, 'I just need to shoot the ball, and I need to get into the rhythm of attacking as much as I can.' We had the ball a little bit more, and I was on the edge of the box. The last one was just the perfect ball from Stordy, so I just had to get my head on it."

Taylor Otto added the third goal, knocking home a close-range chance. The W Canadian Championship is Canada Soccer's new women's domestic knockout competition with a pathway to the 2027 Concacaf W Champions Cup. By advancing to the semifinals, Wild FC has given themselves something meaningful to chase in a season that had offered very little on the scoreboard.
