Cavalry FC (6-2-1) surged past the Halifax Wanderers 2-0 on Thursday at ATCO Field, with goals from Goteh Ntignee and Daan Klomp in the final 22 minutes.
The match held special significance: it was the first time the Cavs faced Marco Carducci since the Calgary legend departed in the offseason after seven seasons and two championships as team captain.
Klomp, who partnered with Carducci for five years, felt the weight of the moment. "I played with him for five years, we had an unbelievable partnership and won championships together," Klomp told OneSoccer after the match. "To face off against each other is a weird feeling. I'm sorry I had to put one past him, but we needed it to secure the win."
Carducci acknowledged the Cavs' quality from his new vantage point. "As someone who was around this club for a longtime, I know the quality, we've seen the quality of this team," he said. "We just had to live and stay in the game as long as possible."
Head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. credited his team's second-half adjustments. "The more you move them, the more you create gaps, and the more cracks that appear," he said of Halifax's defensive shape.
Ntignee opened the scoring in the 68th minute with a powerful right-footed strike from distance. Eleven minutes later, right back Adam Pearlman set up Klomp for a tap-in inside the box. Goalkeeper Nathan Ingham secured his fifth clean sheet of the season.
Carducci was warmly received by the Cavalry faithful during introductions and after the match. "It's the first time I've been back in Calgary since I've moved and Calgary is my home," he said. "To see friends, family, supporters and everybody that was around this club was a special experience."
