Four Canadian Armed Forces members died Saturday in a grass fire at CFB Wainwright that spread rapidly across a live-fire training ground in east-central Alberta, marking one of the worst military tragedies on Canadian soil in peacetime. Thirty-nine others were wounded, 19 of them critically.

The soldiers — Pte. Aidan Goulding of North Vancouver, Pte. Shaun Farrell of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Pte. Hayden Lykkemark of Langley, B.C., and Sgt. Morgan Wong of Edmonton — were members of 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry preparing for overseas deployment when the fire overtook them around 4 p.m. on October 17. Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland, commander of 1st Canadian Division, said winds suddenly shifted during the exercise, and a nearby fire thought to be contained swept across the soldiers' position.

Prime Minister Mark Carney called it "one of the worst tragedies for the Forces on Canadian soil in peacetime" and ordered Canadian flags to fly at half-mast at federal buildings across the country. Parliament held a moment of silence Monday. Defence Minister David McGuinty told reporters Sunday, "Members on every base in Canada feel this loss. Support is there for members and families who need it."

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is investigating the fire's cause. On the ground in Wainwright, residents and first responders have lined up to donate blood and bring meals to those grieving. Wainwright Mayor Bruce Pugh said Radio's The Current, "The messages coming from across Canada that we're receiving … it reinforces that people's hearts actually can beat in time."
