A mixed-income housing project at Currie Barracks will receive $29 million in federal funding to deliver 72 affordable units to Calgary residents, with completion targeted for Christmas 2026.

The initiative is being led by the non-profit Onward and includes 10 townhomes and 62 apartments. The project prioritizes women, children and seniors. Most units will be offered at between 60 and 70 percent below the market rate, while some will be rented at 20 or 10 percent of market rate—a small portion relative to the deeply affordable rents that comprise the majority of the project.

Onward CEO Martina Jileckova emphasized the affordability focus without specifying the exact rent distribution across the 72 units. The City of Calgary supported the project by waiving building permit and development permit fees and expediting approval.

City Chief Housing Officer Reid Henry said the project helps Calgary toward its "Home is Here" strategy goal of creating 3,000 non-market units every year. Last year, the city created 1,800 such units. "We are still short of our affordable housing annual goal," Henry said. "But we are ramping up towards that target, and great projects like this help us get there."
