Elections Alberta has identified a spoof website designed to impersonate the province's official electoral authority, prompting a warning to residents and referrals to law enforcement.

The fake site at electionsab.ca mimics Elections Alberta's legitimate URL, elections.ab.ca. The spoof contains fictitious names, addresses, phone numbers, and fake "elector ID" numbers that Elections Alberta has confirmed do not come from the official List of Electors.

"I believe this disinformation activity is intended to 'spoof' Elections Alberta and is an attempt to reduce public confidence in my Office and electoral events in Alberta," said Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure in a statement.

The discovery follows a recent unauthorized disclosure of the List of Electors. While that breach exposed real voter information, the spoof site contains entirely fabricated data, suggesting an attempt to sow further confusion rather than exploit actual voter records.

McClure said the activity was not covered by newly created deepfake provisions in the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act, and Elections Alberta lacks legislative authority to investigate or take down the site. The office has contacted enforcement and cybersecurity agencies and is attempting to have the website removed.

Residents who notice similar disinformation activity are encouraged to report it to Elections Alberta by calling 780-427-7191 or emailing info@elections.ab.ca.
