A sentencing hearing took place Thursday for Kepra Udup Bang, who was convicted earlier this year of aggravated sexual assault on a woman in July 2019. The man beat the victim unconscious before raping her in Calgary's Forest Lawn area.

The Crown prosecutor Peter Mackenzie proposed a 10-year sentence, while defence lawyers Gunntas Sidhu and David Nguyen asked the judge to consider between seven and nine years. Justice Allan Fradsham will deliver his decision next month.

Mackenzie described the assault as "completely random" and "opportunistic and predatory." The attack occurred when neighbours heard the victim screaming and called 911. One witness saw the man raping the victim, who was 28 years old at the time. By the time help arrived, the attacker had fled and the victim was unconscious. Her belongings were strewn across a sidewalk and grassy area.

The victim had been severely beaten, with vicious assaults on her head and face. Several bones in her face were broken. When she regained consciousness eight days later, she didn't recognize her own mother and had no memory of the attack. She remained in hospital for three months, required surgery to reconstruct facial bones, and used a wheelchair for months afterward. Mackenzie described her injuries as "lifelong."

At the time of the attack, the victim was struggling with addiction and living a transient lifestyle. The judge noted she has been sober since the assault but will live with her mother and hardly leaves the house due to sensitivity to noise. She is unable to work.

Udup Bang's DNA was matched to the case in 2025 after he was arrested for a break and enter in 2024 and required to submit DNA as part of his sentence. Police matched his DNA to swabs collected from the victim's body and a wristband found at the crime scene. Justice Fradsham also heard that Udup Bang experienced a difficult life, having been born in a refugee camp, lost his father, and experienced violence throughout his life.
