Calgary's riskiest pedestrian intersection flagged as drivers run stop signs, phones distract walkers

Martindale Boulevard and Martindale Gate NE in northeast Calgary has been flagged by city officials as the riskiest intersection in the city for pedestrians — a distinction backed by residents who say crossing there feels like a gamble.

The intersection was highlighted in a recent report examining pedestrian-collision risks at locations without traffic signals, lights, or flashing beacons. Drivers frequently roll through the stop sign without fully stopping, and pedestrians are often distracted by phones, the report notes.

"I've been living in this neighbourhood 30 years, and I'll tell you, some days I'm lucky to get through it alive," a longtime resident told reporters. Students at a nearby school have reported close calls. "He just zoomed past me when I was right there. So many speeders, man," one student said.

Ward 4 Coun. DJ Kelly pointed to a design flaw: many flagged intersections were built before distracted driving became a major safety concern. "At least 22 per cent of traffic fatalities involve someone being distracted, and we believe that number is actually underreported," Kelly said.

A flashing beacon could make a meaningful difference, according to residents. "It just slows down traffic a little more. Gives the drivers more time to react. Instead of coming to their own judgement, they just look and see the flashing light," one neighbour explained.

The intersection falls within Ward 5, and Coun. Raj Dhaliwal has indicated he wants improvements at the location treated as a top priority. The city has not disclosed a timeline for improvements.
