New laws take effect in June: opioid controls and consumer rules

Canada adds synthetic opioids to controlled-substance list and strengthens telecom cancellation rules this month.

Canada is rolling out several new laws and regulatory changes in June aimed at consumer protection and public health. The most significant addition is placing certain synthetic opioids and a precursor chemical on Canada's controlled-substances list, restricting their importation, production, and distribution.

Another key change makes it easier for Canadians to cancel or modify their cellphone plans—a rule many provinces have sought for years as competition in telecom tightens.

These amendments to existing laws reflect ongoing efforts to address opioid misuse and balance consumer power in telecommunications. Calgarians should review telecom terms if they're considering plan changes, as the new rules take effect immediately.
