Northwest Calgary daycare on probation over supervision lapses

Fit Kids Care will operate under provincial restrictions until September after failing to report incidents and provide adequate oversight.

Fit Kids Care in northwest Calgary has been placed on a probationary licence after the province found ongoing failures in child supervision, incident reporting, and guidance practices.

The daycare at 8060 Silver Springs Boulevard N.W. will operate under probation until at least September 2, when the province will reassess whether it meets standards for a full licence. If conditions improve, the restriction will be lifted.

Owner Susan To acknowledged the findings. "They're doing their best job to be transparent, which I think is great," she said. "There is some stuff that we need to do better on, which I totally understand."

The facility identified specific issues: school-aged children were unsupervised in bathrooms, and staff failed to report an incident at a park to management or parents. To said the facility has since implemented bathroom passes and modified supervision protocols. The staff members involved in those incidents are no longer with the company.

Fit Kids employs 27 staff members and serves 134 children in daycare and before-and-after school programs. The facility, established in 2007, is required to notify parents of its probationary status — which To said happened Wednesday.

To expressed confidence the facility would "pass its probationary period with flying colours." The probation period gives the daycare a clear window to demonstrate compliance before the province makes its final decision.
