Fort McMurray Métis local government lost approximately $857,000 to a targeted cyberattack that has taken nearly five years to solve, with RCMP now seeking the public's help to locate the suspect.
Roland Carson, a 58-year-old Ontario man, is wanted on multiple fraud and money-laundering charges for the scheme that unfolded through spear-phishing—a targeted cyberattack using personal information to trick individuals or organizations into revealing confidential details or granting system access. The investigation began in November 2021 and only recently identified Carson as the suspect. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
The fraud struck at a vulnerable moment for the organization. Fort McMurray Métis had recently broken ground on a new Cultural Centre when the attack occurred. The organization halted construction on the centre in October 2022, citing funding shortfalls and insufficient planning following the loss.
Kelly Myers, McMurray Métis district captain, told Fort McMurray Today the impact was profound. "It was absolutely devastating. To have to stand in front of our citizens and declare that this has happened when we thought everything was safe and secure, it was absolutely devastating," Myers said.
In response, Fort McMurray Métis strengthened its financial controls and cybersecurity practices, implementing new financial procedures, security measures, and mandatory staff training. RCMP is asking anyone with information about Carson's whereabouts to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
