Prime Minister Mark Carney will join Alberta Premier Danielle Smith for a joint news conference Thursday in Calgary to announce details on a proposed West Coast oil pipeline.
Smith had set a July 1 deadline to submit a pipeline proposal to the federal government's Major Projects Office for possible fast-tracking under Carney's national building plan. The announcement was pushed back by one day due to the Canada Day holiday.
Smith's government signed a memorandum of understanding with the federal government last fall that sets conditions for a possible bitumen pipeline to the West Coast. The agreement is tied to progress on a major carbon capture network by the province's biggest oil producers, who have said they should not bear the multi-billion-dollar cost alone.
According to details reported earlier this week, the province wants to build a new one-million-barrel-per-day pipeline. Any pipeline stretching through British Columbia would likely face opposition from Premier David Eby's government and would require lifting the federal ban on northern oil tankers—a change both Eby and several First Nations communities oppose.
The announcement comes as the provincial government is planning its fall referendum, asking Albertans to answer questions on the Constitution, immigration, and separation.
